Who are we hurting?

Drug addiction and its trail of victims

So many have heard it or possibly have been the one to blurt it out “It is my life and if I want to destroy it that is my choice”. Of course no one is going to argue that an adult can make their own choices but when does it become everyone else’s problem. Addiction is spewing its ugly potion over to many people in today’s society; as you are reading this majority of us have dealt with addiction is some way.

The question is whose problem is it and how can we cure this epidemic that can overtake us like a plague in which we are the one’s who are creating it? If you turn on the television or read the newspaper tragedy is all around us and much of that stems from the up rise in drug manufacturing and the moral relaxation that used to stigmatize society when associated with drugs.

Today drugs are so readily available and even produced legally that provide damaging and addictive results as well. So much knowledge and understanding is given to our children through the school system although there is a rise in children that are first hand affected by addiction and are more likely to at least experiment with their parents daemon.

Addiction the beginning

Most of society can agree that they have had some behavior that was not healthy and could produce unhealthy results. But you still may ask how some become addicted where others do not. Many factors play into the equation where one to one treatment is best to evaluate ones circumstances; there is no text book answer to someone personal journey.

Using an illegal substance happens with most teenagers as a way to feel as an adult or to see what all the hype is about since many substances are plastered all over every media source available to them. When do you stumble from trying to needing a particular drug? Again everyone is different where others become addicted very soon where others do not and also factoring into this is the drug that is used some are more addictive than others. Drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and crack are highly addictive whereas alcohol and marijuana takes time to build a tolerance.

A person may go months, years or a lifetime addicted to drugs without the desire to change or stop. Many times a person that desires rehabilitation or drug treatment facilities are those that have experienced negative consequences in their lives. This can come in the form of a DUI, prison, loosing your children to Children Protective Services, or quite possibly failing organs.

Addiction seals the wholes in a person’s internal emotions therefore those that have experienced adversities are more likely to become addicts as they are attempting to heal themselves by altering the way they feel about themselves with chemicals. So many people have explained why they have started using drugs and even though may have started from experimentation or boredom they continued to use because it made them feel like a new person. This can be used to cover up many inadequacies a person may hold within because the purpose of a drug is to change the chemical makeup in a persons brain therefore producing results that feel different from their damaged self. That is until they have transformed themselves into feeling normal on drugs and cannot see that old self any longer as it may be too painful; results addiction.

When is it time to seek Rehab

Again rehab is a personal choice, I have had clients that are homeless, have lost their children and have HEP-C and still do not see any of this as negative they have allowed the drug to overcome their sense and desire to change. So this is the part that is most damaging to families that unless you have studied addiction or have personally overcame addiction is very hard to grasp a person being comfortable in these circumstances.

A person again may contemplate seeking help from a drug addiction specialist or facility long before they find themselves there. More likely they are found in such a place after dealing with the law and being forced into these places. This again does not guarantee results as most families prey for.

Rehabilitation is a source to find comfort and to reestablish ones life. Unfortunately many of these places foster negative attention because not everyone in rehab is serious about being there subsequently may try to sneak in drugs therefore many addicts fail to trust rehab. With anything else in a person’s life you will find the right rehab if you are searching. As I would tell my clients hustle rehab like you hustled drugs; you did not give up on finding drugs and making them work for you so treat rehab as your new drug!!

The family

The most difficult part of addiction is the family; so many lives are hurt and damaged in the midst of one person’s addiction. My personal opinion for families of addicts is to seek group counseling even if it is without the addict; to be realistic it will most likely be without the addict. But the family needs support to go through these awful times as no one wants to see their family member playing with the devil.

One very apparent thing the family needs is to be stern and most of the time out of fear the family serves as the co-dependant in the addicts lives. That co-dependant person must remove themselves from dealing with the addict as you are only helping them in their addiction and guess what without you they will still find a way to their drug if they so desire to; so why make it so easy!!

Children of the addict I feel especially needs counseling as their feeling of abandonment and their parent loving something other than them may also drive them to addiction. Of course you can never control someone else’s behavior(that is why being the family of an addict is so hard) but children are our most valuable asset and must be protected at all costs. The state facilities and foster homes are becoming overrun with children that have no parents due to an addiction either lost custody or are in a facility somewhere.

We must take a stand

Addiction will consume our nation if something is not done to reverse this road we are currently speeding on. Methamphetamine alone can become the next epidemic to destroy us in which California, Washington and Oregon have already noted a state of emergency against this evilness that can be concocted in any home in the US.

It is apparent by observing the media that drugs are taking our nation down the sewer and are jeopardizing all of our lives since crime is rising and violence is becoming a new wave. Hopefully no one is against rehabilitation because this is one true way to get back our nation.

Excellent Hub here and I bookmarked, and voted up. I will read more later. My family lived not with a drug addict but an alcoholic which was myself. Thank God I over came my addiction and finally living a good life once again. Drugs and alcohol addiction is a horrible thing and that's exactly what I write about in most of my Hubs.

Thanks for sharing and look forward to reading more of your Hubs.
